+ What is AIDS?
AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. If you are infected with HIV and the virus is left untreated, your immune system can be severely damaged and you can develop AIDS.
The HIV virus can be transmitted from person to person, but AIDS is not. AIDS develops in the body after living for a long time with untreated HIV.
You cannot be diagnosed with AIDS unless you are already HIV positive. As long as HIV is diagnosed early and treated effectively, it is unlikely that you will develop an AIDS-related illness. You are more likely to live a long and healthy life.
